Amazon vs. Walmart: Who performs better?

Amazon and Walmart are two of the largest online shipping platforms in the world. In this article, we would like to compare the two platforms and analyze how they have performed in recent years. To do this, we'll take a closer look at a report from our partner Jungle Scout. After we look at the Amazon vs. Walmart report, we'll introduce you to some Amazon tools that you can use to significantly increase your sales. After that, we'll also show you some Walmart tools.

Comparison: Amazon vs. Walmart

To create the Amazon vs. Walmart report, Jungle Scout conducted a data analysis with more than 1,000 consumers in the United States. Since the two major corporations differ greatly in their trajectories, it is particularly interesting to take a look at them. For a long time, Amazon seemed to be the undisputed leader in e-commerce. However, Walmart is becoming stronger and stronger and is developing step by step into a serious competitor.

Important findings

A first important finding is that Amazon remains dominant for the time being. However, Walmart has a clear advantage over Amazon in the grocery sector. More than half of the consumers surveyed in the U.S. buy groceries most often at Walmart. Only about 15 percent buy from Amazon. While Amazon continues to try to penetrate the physical market, Walmart is currently expanding its online presence.

Key figures

In e-commerce, Amazon posted sales figures of $50.9 billion last year. For Walmart, it was $19.2 billion. However, if you look at the total sales figures, Walmart was able to increase them by around 12 percent, while Amazon had to record a decline of almost 5 percent. However, there are still stark differences when it comes to website visitors. Amazon is accessed by 2.5 billion visitors a month, while Walmart is accessed by only 429 billion. In the third quarter of 2022, three-quarters of U.S. consumers shopped at Amazon, while 43 percent shopped at Walmart. However, 65 percent shopped at a physical Walmart store.

Career: Walmart

Walmart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton. Within just over 30 years, the company had opened nearly 2,000 stores across America. Since 2007, customers have also been able to shop online at Walmart. So in recent years, Walmart is also entering the e-commerce business. In 2022, a seller growth of 60 percent was recorded over the period of one year.

Career: Amazon

Amazon was first founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos. Originally just an online bookstore, other products were added to the range after a few years. The introduction of Amazon FBA followed in 2006. Since then, there have also been repeated promotions, such as the first Prime Day 7 years ago. The pandemic in 2020 also gave the company a further boost. Amazon is currently also striving to grow further in the physical market.
